Star Tell
Along Park Street in Alameda, California, RoCoCo continues its exploration of words and meaning in the installation Star Tell. Physically isolating and positioning words, phrases, and stars in the architectural space of a storefront window, RoCoCo uses semantics (the study of language concerned with the meaning of words, phrases, and signs and how they relate) as a material with which to create this artwork. Passers-by are presented with the opportunity to find their own understanding among the words and stars.
RoCoCo has chosen words and phrases that are very recognizable from essential texts that are at a transformative tipping point in our current socio-political situation. The phrases and words, along with the 5-pointed star sign, are presented behind the veiled wall of glass waiting to be discovered and read by the viewer for interpretation and completion. The words are placed among stars, which convey meaning through iconography (we all have access to stars). Stars have an ability to signal guidance, through orientation of adventure, declaring identity and beliefs, and providing patterns for story-telling and myth-making. Individually, these words and signs hold some semblance of meaning, but in combination they illuminate their significance, and become greater than the sum of their parts.
Star Tell was presented as part of Radical Beauty 3 in Alameda, California. It was on view from June 8 through July 9, 2018.
